About Us

Laura M. Averette is a 20+ year Registered Nurse and holds a
Master's of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Trained as both a nurse and a paralegal, she spent the first 16 years of her career in clinical nursing practice, hospital risk management and malpractice claims management for a 4 hospital self-insured health system specializing in general liability and medical malpractice litigation.

Recognizing her love for both medically related litigation and the detail of digging into the medical records, in 2008 she launched LegalNurse, Inc., an independent legal nurse consulting firm specializing in assisting attorneys and claims professionals with medically related claims and litigation as well as expert witness location.

In 2014, as her legal nurse consulting practice has grown, Laura expanded her team by adding two nurse sub-contractors who assist her with managing her ever growing case load and client base.

In 2015, in response to the high demand of attorneys in need of testifying expert witnesses, she launched NurseExpert, Inc., an expert witness recruitment and location service. She now engages in recruiting nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals as expert witnesses in a variety of specialties.  She understands the value of an ACTIVELY PRACTICING expert, the legal mandates of similar situation and other state requirements such as location within a contiguous state.  She appreciates that finding a great expert requires reasonable care, skill, diligence, and a little bit of luck.

Laura is a member of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC).  She speaks on a variety of clinical topics, both locally and nationally to nurses, nurse practitioners, healthcare risk managers, paralegals and attorneys as well as her legal nurse consulting colleagues.

Laura is also a wife and proud mother of two school age children.  She is involved in her church and serves her community by volunteering weekly at The Lovelady Center a home for women transitioning from prison and drug rehabilitation back into society.  She also serves on the Board of Directors for East Lake Initiative, an organization committed to the strengthening of East Lake, a community within the city of Birmingham, through developing affordable housing, supporting the local schools through mentoring and tutoring, and economic development activities.
